Cutaneous manifestations in patients with chronic renal failure on hemodialysis at Tishreen University Hospital
Abstract
This study was conducted to define cutaneous manifestations in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis and their relations to the etiology of chronic renal failure, hemodialysis duration and the age of patients. A total of 116 hemodialysis patients included in the study. A medical history and demographics information were obtained from all the individuals, with a full dermatological examination and specific investigations like skin biopsy of the lesions were carried out, where necessary.
Xerosis cutis was the most common skin lesion, while xerostomia was the most common oral mucosal change. The most common hair change was sparse scalp hair. Absent lunula was the most common nail change. There was a relationship between some of these manifestations and certain etiology of chronic renal failure. There was also a significant association of these manifestations with the age of the patients, but not with hemodialysis duration.
CRF is associated with a complex array of cutaneous manifestations caused either by the disease or by treatment.
