The Effect of OCPs on Cellular and Colposcopic Findings of Uterus Cervix
Keywords:
Oral contraceptive pill, Pap smear.Abstract
Background: : Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, The association between oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use and cervical epithelial abnormalities remains controversial.
Objectives: To evaluate the association between long-term oral contraceptive pill use and cervical cytological and colposcopic findings.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 120 women aged 18–50 years. 50 women had been using combined oral contraceptive pills, while 70 women who had never used contraceptives served as the control group. All participants underwent Pap smear examination and colposcopic evaluation.
Results: Inflammatory cytological findings were observed in 44% of OCP users and 34.28% of controls. Abnormal Pap smear findings were more frequent among OCP users (8% ASC-US) than controls (2.85% ASC-US). Normal colposcopic findings were reported in 58% of OCP users and 74.28% of controls. The frequency of abnormal cytological and colposcopic findings increased with longer duration of OCP use.
Conclusions: : Long-term use of combined oral contraceptive pills was associated with a higher frequency of abnormal cervical cytological and colposcopic findings.
