Keywords:
Hip fracture, Nurses knowledge, Demographic variablesAbstract
Introduction: Hip fracture is one of the most common injuries worldwide, leading to deterioration of health status, reduced quality of life, and increased disability levels among patients. This type of fracture is a major cause of loss of mobility and social interaction, imposing a significant burden on patients and their families.
Objective: To assess the level of knowledge among nursing staff regarding care provided to hip fracture patients in relation to demographic variables.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive, quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 30 nursing staff members in the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Lattakia University Hospital in Lattakia. Data were collected between February 2026 and March 2026 using a structured questionnaire comprising two parts: the first part covered demographic and professional data, and the second part consisted of a scale assessing nursing staff knowledge about nursing care provided to hip fracture patients.
Results: The findings of the current study revealed a generally low and severe deficit in knowledge among all nursing staff members regarding preoperative and postoperative care for hip fracture patients.
Recommendations: Develop and implement standardized protocols for nursing care of hip fracture patients before and after surgery. Conduct further studies on the adult population regarding nursing staff knowledge of hip fracture care with a larger sample size.
