Assessment of the Knowledge Level of Latakia University Students Regarding the Signs and Causes of High-Risk Pregnancy

Abstract

Knowledge of the signs and causes of high-risk pregnancy is a cornerstone of reproductive health. Assessing the level of awareness among youth—particularly university students—is essential, as they represent future parents. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge level of students at Latakia University regarding the signs and causes of high-risk pregnancy. A convenience sample of 100 students from five faculties was surveyed between April 20 and May 10, 2025, using a specially developed questionnaire. The results showed that approximately two-fifths of the sample had good knowledge of danger signs, while the vast majority had good knowledge of the causes of high-risk pregnancy. No statistically significant differences were found between knowledge levels and demographic variables. The main source of their information was media and social networks, followed by doctors, nurses. The study recommended organizing health seminars and workshops targeting all faculties to provide students with accurate information about the signs and causes of high-risk pregnancy, integrating reproductive health topics into academic curricula, and activating the role of medical and nursing staff in disseminating information through lectures.
