Comparative study between the proximal Radio-Cephalic AVF and the Brachio-Cephalic AVF

Abstract

End-stage renal failure is a major public health problem with significant morbidity and mortality. Due to the long duration of hemodialysis, additional access was required before proceeding to brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistula.

Objective: Comparison between the proximal Radio-Cephalic and the Brachio-Cephalic fistula according to the patency rate and steal syndrome incidence.

The study included 60 patients were divided into 2 groups in equal, proximal Radio-Cephalic AVF  and Brachio-Cephalic AVF, between 2022-2024 , the observation had been made on 4 periods : 1 ,2 ,3 and 6 months, depending on the physical examination and the Doppler ultrasound .

The incidence of steal syndrome was less in the proximal Radio- Cephalic AVF in comparison with the Brachio-Cephalic AVF group, and the patency rate was approximate in both groups without any important statistical drawings.

The proximal Radio-Cephalic AVF is considered an excellent extra vascular access before moving to create a Brachio-Cephalic AVF in ESRD patients who are in need of hemodialysis for long terms.
