He was a brave, high-class man of war who was not afraid of horrors. He participated in the Arab victory in more than one battle. However, he was known for foolishness and haste. His relations with some of the Umayyad governors were characterized by the contrast between good and bad, and even good ones.  Like his relationship with Qutaybah ibn Muslim al-Bahili, the commander of the Khorasan army, it fluctuated from good at first to bad, to the point of killing Qutaybah, and interests played a major role in determining the form of those relations. Even when he took over Khurasan, even if the period was short, not exceeding nine months he was contradictory in his actions, which included many  Foolishness, and his will to his children indicates this as well.
