The Role of CT-guided Transthoracis Needle Biopsy in Diagnosis of Lung Cancer

Abstract

Transthoracic needle biopsy TTNB is integral in the diagnosis and treatment of many thoracic diseases and is an important alternative to more invasive surgical procedures. Both computed tomography and ultrasound may be used as imaging guidance for TTNB, with CT being more commonly utilized. Common complications of TTNB include pneumothorax and hemoptysis.

The study was conducted on 406 patients (male and female) patients who visited different departments in Tishreen University Hospital (Pediatric, hematology, oncology, pulmonology and thoracic surgery). In The period stretching between 2016-2020. The patients' ages ranged between 19 and 82 and 92% of the cases suffered from malignant lesions.

In this article, indications, technical aspects of the procedure expected success and complications rates of computed tomography guided transthoracic needle biopsy of pulmonary nodules and masses will be discussed.
