Abstract

Aim: To assess the effect of spacer's thickness of the custom tray in selective pressure technique on the retention of maxillary denture bases.

Materials and methods: The study sample included ten full edentulous healthy males, with mean age of 58 years. For each patient two maxillary custom trays are made, one with spacer= 1mm and another with spacer= a single sheet of base-plate wax. Two final impressions are made, then for each patient two maxillary denture bases are made. The retention of the two bases was measured for every patient with a digital force gauge.

Results: the mean value of retention when using spacer= 1mm higher than when using spacer= a single sheet of base-plate wax by a statistically significant difference of 35.06%.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that the use of spacer precisely 1mm thick at selective pressure technique to make the final impression of maxillary edentulous arches contributes to enhancing the retention of maxillary denture bases Compared to the conventional method of using spacer of base-plate wax.
