The Repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian War on US Interests in Europe

Abstract

American policy toward the Russian-Ukrainian war was based on two main principles: first, avoiding direct involvement in the war, and second, raising the military and economic costs for Russia. In line with these principles, the United States played a pivotal role that significantly impacted the course of the war. As a result of these policies, the United States achieved a number of gains that strengthened its security, economic, and geopolitical interests in Europe. From a security perspective, the war led to increased NATO military spending and restored its cohesion under American hegemony. Economically, it reduced the interdependence between Europe and Russia, particularly in the energy sector, which contributed to significant economic gains, especially in liquefied natural gas exports and arms sales to Europe. Geopolitically, the war weakened Russia's influence in Europe while increasing American influence and isolating Russia internationally, in addition to limiting European attempts at strategic independence in the short and medium term.
