The research aimed to study the phenomenon of poverty and inequality among households in rural Lattakia, based on preliminary data from a random sample of 382 households, distributed according to the administrative division of regions, districts, and villages, according to their specific weights. The research used a questionnaire suitable for the research purposes. Data was collected during September 2023. Using a descriptive analytical approach and a mathematical approach, poverty and inequality indicators were calculated using appropriate mathematical equations. The results revealed the economic vulnerability of the majority of rural households, with the poverty rate reaching approximately (88.2%), while the poverty gap and severity of poverty reached approximately (0.485) and (0.397), respectively. This indicates the significant expansion and depth of poverty among rural households. Gini coefficient for total household expenditure reached approximately (39%), indicating a relatively large inequality in living standards among rural households. As for household expenditure on food, Gini coefficient reached approximately (37%), indicating above-average inequality. The study recommended taking these indicators and their updates into account when formulating local development plans, and poverty reduction programs, to ensure reduced inequality, and greater equity among rural populations.
