Abstract

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is one of the most common cardiac surgeries. Despite its effectiveness, 30–60% of patients experience sleep disturbances postoperatively, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, which negatively affect recovery. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure in improving sleep quality among CABG patients. The study included 150 patients from the National Heart Surgery Hospital and Latakia University Hospital and followed a quasi-experimental design. The intervention group received acupressure sessions on selected points three times daily during the first week of hospitalization, followed by home-based sessions at a rate of 14 sessions per week for one month. The control group received routine hospital care. Data were collected using a demographic and health information form and the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS), assessed pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at three-month follow-up. The results showed statistically significant differences (p<0.01) between the two groups in multiple sleep quality indicators, with no association between sleep quality and education level or employment. The study recommends adopting acupressure as an effective non-pharmacological method in the care plan for CABG patients and increasing attention to sleep disturbances to reduce complications and accelerate recovery.
