Abstract

This research provides an in-depth geopolitical analysis of the Russia-Ukraine war as a pivotal challenge of the 21st century, evolving from a regional conflict into a threat to global stability.

The research explores the historical and geopolitical roots of the conflict, examining the shared legacy of "Kyiv Rus," Soviet-era policies, and Ukraine's independence in 1991. It also highlights pivotal events, such as Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, its support for separatists in Donbas, and NATO's eastward expansion.

The research discusses the political and economic dimensions of the war, including Western support for Ukraine, sanctions imposed on Russia, their repercussions on European infrastructure and economies, and the resulting energy crisis. The research analyzes the impact of these repercussions on European security, addressing the challenges of collective defense, the role of international alliances in reshaping security balances, and Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO.

Based on the descriptive-analytical approach, the research concluded that the war led to a revitalization of the concept of European military security, revealing the continent's weak self-defense capabilities. It also resulted in deep economic and energy crises, increased divisions within the European Union, and the strengthening of anti-Western alliances. The research anticipates the scenario of a continued military stalemate as the most probable, affirming that the war has transformed into a protracted war of attrition threatening Europe's geopolitical and economic stability in the foreseeable future.
