The Effect of Feeding Two Locally Adapted Earthworm Species with Two Types of Organic Wastes on the Quality of the Produced Fertilizer (Vermicompost)

This experiment was conducted in a greenhouse belonging to the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Latakia, located behind the faculty building, with the aim of evaluating the efficiency of two locally adapted earthworm species, Eisenia andrei and Eisenia fetida, in converting organic waste into organic fertilizer (vermicompost).
The study employed a factorial experimental design to examine the effect of two organic waste mixtures: the first consisting of cardboard and kitchen waste, and the second consisting of cardboard, kitchen waste, and cattle manure. The experiment evaluated their impact on reproductive capacity and the quality of the final product. The results showed biological compatibility and similar performance for both species of the genus Eisenia, with the produced vermicompost recording a nitrogen content of 0.7% and a carbon content of 17.33%. In addition, optimal electrical conductivity values were achieved, with an average of 2.33, making the product safe and suitable for most agricultural crops.
These findings indicate that both earthworm species are well adapted to the local environment (the coastal environment) and produce satisfactory results under local conditions. From a behavioral perspective, the worms showed a preference for carbohydrate-rich wastes (such as apple and banana peels). It is therefore recommended that organic residues be chopped or partially boiled, as this accelerates the feeding process and increases the rate of production.
