Preliminary Study on the Effects of Ethanolic Extract of Hypericum nanum var. prostratum on Human Breast Cancer MDA-MB-231 Cells: An In Vitro Study
Keywords:
Hypericum nanum; Metalonic extract; MDA-MB-231Abstract
This study evaluated the anticancer potential of an ethanolic extract from the aerial parts of Hypericum nanum var. prostratum against human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro. Results demonstrated a dose- and time-dependent inhibition of cell growth by
93.5-100% after 96 hours at a concentration of 1 µg/ml. The IC50 value decreased from 0.15 µg/ml (24 h) to 0.01 µg/ml (96 h), indicating a cumulative effect. Growth stimulation at low concentrations (0.001-0.01 µg/ml), suggested; hormesis. These results emphasized the anticancer potential of the extract from this plant however, further studies are needed to isolate the active compounds and validate effect mechanisms.
