The optimal production volume for achieving economic efficiency of citrus farms in Lattakia Governorate

Abstract

The study aimed to study the impact of the size of agricultural holdings on the economic efficiency indicators of citrus fruits, by studying the relative importance of production costs and economic indicators of production, estimating cost functions and studying the economies of scale for citrus production in Lattakia Governorate, through a questionnaire prepared for this purpose, on a random sample that included 380 farmers in 19 villages. The results showed a decrease in the cost of the production unit with the increase in the size of the farm area, which is consistent with the concept of economics of capacity. The optimal production was estimated at about 4,500 kg/dunum, and the optimal farm capacity at the level of  Lattakia Governorate is 13.14 dunums.

The study concluded by providing the necessary support to citrus farmers by providing production requirements and supporting their purchase prices, especially fertilizers of all kinds, in addition to insect and fungal control materials, and activating the role of agricultural guidance in conveying research results to farmers, especially with regard to the factors affecting production, due to its direct economic importance to their production.
